If you think someone has been poisoned:

  • Stay calm
  • Call your local poison center at (800) 222-1222 right away
  • Do not wait for signs/symptoms to appear
  • Bring the jar or bottle with you to the phone so you have the exact name of the product
  • Determine approximately when the poisoning took place
  • Determine the age and approximate weight of the person
  • Share if the person has any other health problems
  • Share if you have already tried any home treatments
  • Listen carefully to the staff and follow instructions exactly
  • Ask questions if you are not clear what you should do

Some simple tips to help keep yourself safe from venomous creatures:

  • When outdoors, be aware of your surroundings; venomous creatures are active during the warmest parts of the day in winter and the coolest parts of day in summer
  • If you leave clothing, shoes, towels, etc., outside be sure to check them before use
  • Do not put your hands or feet in tight outdoor spaces
  • Wear shoes and use a flashlight when outdoors after dark
