It’s normal to feel some stress before a hospital stay, but preparation and clear expectations can help. Our team is here to guide you through the process and make your experience as comfortable and worry-free as possible.
Admission process
When you arrive for inpatient behavioral health care, the admission process includes five key steps:
- Registration - The patient and/or family member completes required paperwork.
- Physical assessment - A nurse or doctor conducts a medical and behavioral health evaluation.
- Orientation - A staff member provides a tour of the unit and explains daily routines.
- Authorization for treatment - The patient and/or legal guardian signs treatment consent forms.
- Release authorization - Patients 18 or older may choose whether to allow staff to share information with family or friends.
Inpatient care for teens (ages 12–17)
The Banner Behavioral Health Hospital Inpatient Treatment Center offers a supportive, supervised environment for adolescents ages 12–17.
- Length of stay: Most teens stay 3–7 days.
- Medical care: A psychiatrist oversees care and prescribes medications if needed.
- Supportive setting: Staff help teens identify emotions, manage distressing thoughts, and build healthier coping skills.
Services for teens
Treatment may include:
- Family services and therapy
- Group therapy sessions
- Skill-building and coping groups
- Individual therapy, as recommended
Expectations and rules
For health and safety, teens are expected to:
- Maintain personal hygiene
- Complete assigned schoolwork, chores and therapeutic tasks
- Take medications as prescribed
- Limit phone use to one brief call each evening

What teens can bring
Because storage is limited, please pack lightly. The following items will be locked during the stay:
- Backpacks, purses, luggage, tote bags
Parents/guardians will be asked to take home:
- Jewelry
- Cash or credit cards
- ID documents (driver’s license, Social Security card, etc.)
- Cell phones, laptops or tablets
Items not allowed include:
- Any type of jewelry or body piercings
- Clothing or accessories that depict violence, drugs, alcohol, sex, gangs or weapons
- Ball caps, bandanas or scarves
- Cash
For safety, staff check all belongings during admission and visits.
Inpatient care for adults
Our adult behavioral health program is located in a modern facility with private rooms and 24/7 supervision. Treatment is designed to provide stability, skill development, and ongoing support.
- Length of stay: Typically 3–7 days.
- Medical care: Physicians are directly involved in care and medication management.
- Family involvement: Adults may invite significant others (18+) to participate in family therapy sessions.
Expectations and rules
Patients are asked to:
- Maintain personal hygiene
- Participate in assigned therapeutic activities
- Take medications as directed
- Place or receive brief phone calls between 7 a.m.–10 p.m., except during treatment sessions

Plan as if you were packing for a short, informal trip. Items that will be locked during your stay include:

Please leave at home:
- Large sums of money or credit cards
- Jewelry
- Cell phones, laptops or tablets
Patients may keep up to $10 at the nursing station for snacks.
After hospitalization
Your care doesn’t end when you leave the hospital. Before discharge, you and your doctor will discuss next steps, which may include:
- Outpatient therapy programs
- Medication management
- Group or family therapy
