Hospice FAQ

At Banner Health, we are here to support you and your loved ones as you prepare for hospice. Whether you are considering hospice care for yourself or someone close to you, it’s natural to have questions.

Our goal is to give you clear, helpful information so you can focus on what matters most - your time together.

Who pays for hospice care? Does Medicare cover hospice?

Hospice costs vary depending on your insurance plan and the type of services you need.

  • Medicare: The Medicare hospice benefit covers:
    • Care and services provided by the hospice team
    • Medications and medical equipment related to the terminal illness
    • All levels of hospice care, including routine, respite, inpatient and continuous care
  • Private insurance: Most private health plans also include hospice coverage. If you’re unsure about your benefits, call our office at 970-397-2451 and we will help you review your options.

Where does hospice care take place?

Whenever possible, hospice care is provided in the comfort of your home. Being at home allows patients to stay close to loved ones in a familiar setting.

When needed, inpatient hospice services are available. Our inpatient facility provides 24-hour support from a supervising nurse and a compassionate medical team.

We also provide hospice care in a variety of settings, including:

  • Group homes
  • Assisted living communities
  • Independent living facilities
  • Skilled nursing facilities

When should hospice care begin?

Hospice typically begins when a patient has a life-limiting condition with a prognosis of six months or less, if the illness runs its normal course. Care can continue beyond six months as long as the patient continues to meet hospice criteria.

The decision to start hospice is personal. We believe in a collaborative approach that includes the patient, family and care team in every step of the decision-making process.

What is the difference between hospice and home health care?

Hospice and home health are both delivered at home when possible, but they serve different purposes:

  • Hospice care focuses on comfort and quality of life during the final stages of illness.
  • Home health care supports recovery and ongoing treatment, such as care for diabetes, wound healing, or nutrition support.

It’s important to know that Banner Hospice is not the same as Banner Home Care. Learn more about Banner Home Care.
