Types
- Heat Rash: A skin irritation caused by blocked sweat glands.
- Heat Cramps: Painful muscle spasms caused by dehydration and electrolyte loss.
- Heat Exhaustion: A more serious condition characterized by weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and heavy sweating.
- Heat Stroke: The most severe form of heat related illness, where the body’s temperature rises above 104°F (40°C) and organs can be damaged.
Signs
- Sweating (excessive or none at all)
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness and lightheadedness
- Confusion and disorientation
- Rapid heart rate
- High body temperature

Treatment
Treatment depends upon the severity of the symptoms. Talk to your provider about best treatment plan.
- Heat Rash and Cramps: Rest in a cool environment, drink plenty of fluids, and apply cool compresses.
- Heat Exhaustion: Seek medical attention immediately. Treatment may include IV fluids, electrolyte replacement, and rest.
- Heat Stroke: This is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical attention. Treatment may include ice baths, medication to lower body temperature, and organ support.
Prevention
- Stay Cool: Stay in air-conditioned areas.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink two to four cups of water every hour if possible.
- Stay Informed: Check your local news for extreme heat warnings and safety tips.
